As the wind industry innovates in search of lower cost, higher reliability, and larger nameplate capacities, drivetrain components are forced to evolve. This latest article by Natural Power experts Kim Clark, Meghan Reha, and Valerie Marquis dives into the history, design & implementation, and risk mitigation behind journal bearings used in wind turbine drivetrains. Deceptively simple, journal bearings have a long history in other industries, but can they be adapted to the rigors of a multi-megawatt wind turbine? Read more in the full article below. Capacity testing is a critical acceptance procedure for photovoltaic (PV) projects. However, common testing methods, can be hindered by challenging weather conditions in the winter and complex system designs, making it difficult to obtain sufficient valid data within the required timeframe. Senior Project Engineer, Alexandria (Ali) Dionigi recently presented her poster on Natural Power’s study exploring different strategies and limitations to overcome weather-related restrictions in capacity testing. Read more about the suggested methods to ensure reliable results despite environmental constraints. https://hubs.ly/Q03n52bZ0

Solar PV growth has surged in recent years, with the five leading markets increasing PV installation capacity in the first half of 2024. New technologies, such as floating solar, and agricultural applications are also helping the industry to evolve. Our Head of Solar, William Delabre, expands on these key topics in this month's PES Solar magazine. Read the full article from page 70 below:
Around 560 GWdc of solar PV installations were projected for 2024, up about a third from 20231 and the five leading solar markets either kept pace or increased PV installation capacity in the first half of 2024, with China installing more than 100 GWdc and India installing more solar in the first half of 2024 than it did for the whole of 2023.
