SCIP South Florida Chapter - Webinar

Competitive intelligence is the discipline of creating timely actionable insights for decision-making executives. Consciously or unconsciously, it is practiced throughout the world, in industries of all kinds, and in companies of all sizes.

Competitive intelligence is the discipline of creating timely actionable insights for decision-making executives. Consciously or unconsciously, it is practiced throughout the world, in industries of all kinds, and in companies of all sizes.

The “what to do” in competitive intelligence - the basic components involved - is the same across the board; collection, analysis, delivery & reflection. As we all know from other business practices, however, “One size fits all” approach does not always work in different business environments in different parts of the world, and competitive intelligence is no exception. The variation often arises in the “how to do it” part. To answer this question “How do we conduct competitive intelligence?” -- a question for many of us working for international companies which conduct business in Latin America-- SCIP South Florida chapter welcomes two speakers from São Paulo, Brazil to present to our fifth program this year.

ing us live via GoToMeeting, Alexandre Del Rey and Felipe Buzzerio – both veteran practitioners of competitive intelligence and regular speakers on the topic - will share with us the particular challenges of conducting competitive intelligence in emerging markets such as Latin America and tips on how to build an agile intelligence organization/processes, fit to get a competitive edge in Latin American markets.

The chapter is also delighted to introduce our new venue host – Sony Latin America which generously offered us the use of their conference room for our first meeting in Miami. Conveniently located in the middle of a multinational business hub in Miami, with many Latin American headquarters, we expect to attract a good number of multicultural and multinational company executives to us at Sony Latin America for another dynamic discussion. We hope you can us.

  • ANTICIPATING THE RESULT OF MARKETING DECISIONS - THE USAGE OF BAYESIAN NETWORKS TO INFER STRATEGIC POSITIONING

    XXV SEMEAD

Uncertainties are inherent parts of decision making process in companies. The lack of information about the business environment, the lack of knowledge about the future result of a decision and the impossibility to assign probabilities of success or failure to a particular decision are present in the process of Competitive Intelligence, especially when dealing with the competitive environment and market positioning. This paper explores Bayesian networks as a tool to reduce these uncertainties in the assessment of Market Positioning. Here, it is presented the result of quasi-experiments conducted in simulated environments, evaluating the performance in the processes of inference and
forecasting of groups that used the tool in comparison to those not using. It was generated contributions through the observations and data obtained from these quasiexperiments.
From the methodological standpoint, flaws in the construction of quasiexperiments and suggestions for improvement were presented. Regarding the performance data, it was possible to analyze evidence to justify the proposition of new studies on the subject. Furthermore, it was possible to identify a more structured process for inference and decision taken under uncertainty.

  • The use of Bayesian networks in interpreting weak signals in simulated management environments - An Exploratory Research

    XXIII Semead

The environmental analysis for strategic planning is an important activity for organizations
(ALMEIDA, 2009). In this context, anticipating strategic surprises (Ansoff, 1975) and mobilizing
the organization for action (Gilad, 2004) are essential to protect those organizations from
potential threats and opportunities that present themselves. The process of strategic monitoring

The process of strategic monitoring
the environment in the organization (ALMEIDA et al, 2007) helps it to monitor and identify
weak signals. However the available techniques such as scenario analysis (SHOEMAKER,
1995), the collective creation of meaning (LESCA, 1995) and the Delphi method (Wright, 2000)
are susceptible to behavioral biases (Bazerman, 2004; MARCH, 1988). The aim of this paper was
to evaluate the use of dynamic Bayesian networks in conjunction with other techniques in the
interpretation of weak signals (Michael & SIMON, 2008; DEL REY & ZWICKER, 2010), in the
virtual environment of a laboratory of management (SAUAIA, 2010) to calculate the forecast of
market demand, (SOUZA & SAUAIA, 2010) by analyzing data from this environment. The study proved feasible the application of Bayesian networks to forecast demand and can be
replicated in laboratory environments with greater volume of primary data.
