Understanding the Venture Capital Network Dynamics as Social Capital Creation: a Brazilian Study Case

Brazilian venture capital is considered a relatively new environment, having just a handful of players until mid-2000. The study setting is a company that has successfully implemented an innovative VC business model. Besides adopting the General Partners and Limited Partners traditional model, this company also has 90+ shareholders that are considered a “Market Expert Active Proprietary Network.”

The study setting is a company that has successfully implemented an innovative VC business model. Besides adopting the General Partners and Limited Partners traditional model, this company also has 90+ shareholders that are considered a “Market Expert Active Proprietary Network.”
The aim of this paper is to apply the “social capital” framework to characterize and explore how Venture Capital companies use their different market networks to create value for stakeholders. To enrich our examination of how the value creation process occurs, we also used the “weak ties and strong ties” framework to expand this concept of value creation.
Our investigation produced results that reveal that the traditional social capital structure concept, which consists of structural, cognitive and relational dimensions, can operate in a different way depending on the specific context. We also found that the weak and strong ties concept, used to analyse the network of shareholders, can be impacted depending on the network’s cultural and contextual setting. With the help of concepts like loose coupling, sensemaking and bricolage to explain how the social capital formation can be created in a dynamic environment, we explore how intellectual capital can be combined and exchanged in a more dynamic and unstructured way. -

Mobile communications are permeating virtually every aspect of our lives. The market is experiencing rapid improvements in technologies, while mobile operators are trying to figure out new ways their infrastructures can provide services to the customers. Furthermore, -innovation with new ways of using these technologies generates powerful loops back into the innovation processes. In this turbulent environment it is difficult to capture and conceptualize how newness comes about and what the main characteristics of innovation are. The aim of this paper is to illustrate how the concept of interactive innovation can be applied to explain the development of mobile services. This study adopts the perspective of the developer rather than the . Moreover, through the social construction of technology lens, the concepts of sense-making and bricolage are applied to explain the innovation appropriation process during the mobile data value chain improvement process. One of the conclusions drawn is that in the rapidly changing and complex context of mobile services development, the traditional notion of ‘interactive innovation’ cannot fully explain this phenomenon that takes place.
