Dry electromyography sensor with tri-axial accelerometer wireless for movement assessments

Currently, movement assessment uses superficial electromyography (sEMG) sensors and video cameras to capture how the neural system works during human movement, in laboratories. The results are limited since they do not reflect the patient daily life, once the exam is conducted in controlled environment. Additionally, those systems are expensive and require high level of expertise, thus limiting the application of such technology. On the other hand, the improvement of low-cost motion sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, allows them to be used to measure the movement of human body. In this work we proposed the integration of sEMG and accelerometer in a single device, or sensor, to evaluate de human movement. As a consequence of the integration, the sensor is able to capture mechanical information correlated to the physiological data. The preliminary results show that it is possible to build a sensor capable of capturing the motion signal correlated with the gait and cycling, and correlate this information with sEMG signal.
