  • Design and construction of a membrane-tensegrity sculpture

    This work describes the design and the construction of a membrane-tensegrity sculpture, developed in the context of a graduate course on light structures at the University of São Paulo. The resulting article was presented in IASS 2018, hosted by the MIT.

    The structure combines compressive struts and a continuous membrane, to shape an octahedral star, whose equilibrium conditions are much alike a tensegrity module. As initial geometry it was assumed the first stellation of the octahedron, which allowed the definition of a single type of fabric pattern, repeated 12 times. Alternative patterning and shape finding methods are also discussed in the paper.

  • Structural optimization using evolutionary algorithms - an application to stadium design

    When dealing with complex, multi-dimensional and multi-objective optimizations, there is an increasing
    difficulty in defining a mathematical model to be solved by classical analytical methods. In this context,
    the implementation of evolutionary algorithms may prove to be a more flexible tool for proposing
    optimized solutions. This paper adopts the Grasshopper environment, along with Galapagos and
    Karamba3d, to set up an optimization tool.
