This proposal offers the groundbreaking Atmosphere and Plume Explorer (APEX) CubeSat mission architecture to perform atmospheric science of two moons of Jupiter, Europa and Io. This 6U CubeSat would be a secondary spacecraft on the Europa Clipper planetary exploration mission currently planned to arrive in the Jovian system in the late 2020’s. Clipper is currently planned to perform a variety of scientific experiments in the vicinity of Europa during its 45 flybys of the moon. With a mass of 10 kg and a total average power of 3 Watts, APEX is a small but capable independent satellite. With a total Δ𝑣 budget of 230 m/s, APEX is capable of operating autonomously from Clipper. APEX will provide additional data on Europa in of the Clipper mission, as well as its own unique set of data for the moon Io. The Neutral and Ion Constituents in Atmospheres (NICA) instrument carried onboard APEX will characterize the composition and number of both the neutral and ionic particles that exist in the tenuous atmospheres of these two moons. APEX will also include as suite of dosimeters gathering information on the radiation environment. For a small mass penalty, the main Europa Clipper mission gains significant added scientific benefit from this secondary spacecraft.

We proposed and analyzed the effectiveness of an SVRG variant on artificial neural networks and concluded that these variants did not improve the learning capacity of the network when compared to the most popular methods, such as SGD, Adam and RMSProp.

Computational aerodynamics for vertical-axis wind turbines

I worked under advisors Dr. Dietmar Rempfer and Peter Kozak on a summer undergraduate group research project developing a computer program to simulate the aerodynamics of a vertical-axis wind turbine with the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) method, also implementing a stall model and wake correction. In addition to that, we implemented a control system for active blade pitch and demonstrated that this system can significantly increase the power efficiency of such a turbine.

I was part of the Atmospheric Plume Exploration of Europa (APEX) Project under Prof. Dr. Victoria Coverstone and Prof. Dr. Alex Ghosh. APEX is a concept study funded by JPL, concerning into the design of a CubeSat spacecraft capable of a deep space mission to Europa, one of Jupiter's moons.
During the first half of the project, I was under the Propulsion and Structures group, looking into viable propulsion units for this this kind of mission. During the first half of the project, I was under the Propulsion and Structures group, looking into viable propulsion units for this this kind of mission. In the second half of the project, I was in the group responsible for thermal simulations studying possible designs of the spacecraft.
