You're a mining engineer who wants to stay ahead of the curve. How can you make technology work for you?
With the adoption of technologies in the mining industry, we can be a more diverse and inclusive workforce. There are mines with a 40% of female participation, people with disabilities, different ages, where automation, AI, remote workplace, etc. are already installed. These help with the conciliation of the different aspect of everyone (professional, personal and family), creating more mature cultures, where respect and being proud are predominant values of the organisation. A diverse and inclusive organisation, creates a greater value in every aspect of the value chain and in esg areas.

I agree that LinkedIn, YouTube, podcasts, WhatsApp are great platforms to engage with other professionals and peers. However, there is a lot more ways where you can connect with other people of the mining industry, such as been submitted to newsletters, attend seminars and workshops, participate actively in organisations and foundations, attend alumni reunions, go to post graduated courses (diplomas, masters, PhD, etc), in the cafeteria of the office, etc. My point, don’t rely only on technology to expand your network, also you need personal skills (prepare your pitch) to approach people face to face, and you will be developing a strong and robust network and a reputation.

An example of this trend is how we can reach to the best practices within the mining industry and outside (example: we adopted the digital transformation 15 years after other industries). Part of the mindset that needs to be changed is how we can help each other on combining different experiences (professionals, processes, ways of doing certain activities, etc) to seek better and efficient solutions to nowadays problems. We need to understand that everything can be improved, be humble that as professionals we don’t know everything and that to make the change happen, we need to put a lot of energy in the system and culture.
