Experienced engineering leader with 24+ years of professional experience. I have worked many years as a software developer and in recent years, as an Engineering Manager. My work spans a number of industries (metallurgy, telco, fintech, CX and currently AI), and many different technologies (C++ & PHP many years ago; most recently in Java/Python). The bulk of my experience has been on backend, with a focus on scalability problems, low latency, concurrency, observability, and being close to operations (oncall, monitoring, troubleshooting). I have solid OOP experience and knowledge of design patterns, and worked multiple times on refactoring legacy systems, both as an IC as well as a leader, building teams around that challenge. I have extensive experience as a technical interviewer, for technical screenings, coding and design interviews.

As a manager, my focus has been building and growing highly performing teams, with an emphasis on building a positive work culture, learning from failures, spreading responsibility and knowledge, and fostering ownership and growth opportunities. Also, I have also done sourcing, hiring and interviewing in order to grow our headcount. I regularly meet with my team to get/give , discuss their career path, challenges and concerns and whatever other topics they might have. I try to be as involved in the technical discussions as possible, and actively participate in the roap definition.

Besides my native Spanish, I have native-level English (and a bit of German).

Originally from an arts background, I'm also a skilled pianist, singer and composer, with classical education, having scored more than 25 published game titles as well as a few short films. I also draw and paint (oil, pencil, pen, gauche), like sculpting on clay and doing anything creative. I did a couple of small games (coding, art, music, etc).

I'm extremely curious and like learning new things and how stuff actually works; I always have more personal projects than I can handle.

      During my tenure as a Senior Manager, I managed ~12 engineers grouped into 3 teams (Survey Engine, Distribution and Social), scattered across multiple time zones and locations in India, Europe and America. I helped build the team through sourcing, interviewing, and onboarding. I had frequent 1:1s with each of them and worked on their career path. Eventually, we got a new engineering manager to handle one of the teams and report to me.

      The business hovered mostly around collection: web survey collection, sampling and distribution of email invitations, anti cheating detection, social , etc. Since most of our components were shared services, the engineering challenges were mainly related to scalability issues, migrating legacy components into a better architecture and into newer technologies. At the time I left, we were executing a few multi-year plans for overhauling our architecture.

      Towards the end of my tenure I was less involved in managing individual tickets and more into long term discussions, roap definition and negotiation with Product and other engineering leaders.

      We were able to transform the weekly oncall rotation by adding metrics, alerts, SOPs, documentation and generally, having the whole team cover each other’s back. I was always oncall as secondary. We were able to change our QA dynamic from being a late-game delivery to a disconnected team to them being part of the lifecycle from day 1, interact with the PMs, design test cases early on and be able to test incomplete bits of functionality for early ; moving more from manual testing to automated one.

      The team owned the technical discussions; we had an architect help us and weekly technical discussions with each team. I drove most of the discussions, making focused questions and making initiative-level decisions, but leaving the team to make and own the lower level decisions.

      I'm absolutely proud of the team, the level of ownership and the culture we built.

      After a one year tenure on Core Reporting, helping to build a brand new team and modularizing the code, I started to work on Core Collections where there are even greater challenges ahead around assuming ownership of the project and taking the platform to the next level.

      I ed the Core Reporting (backend) team. There were plenty of challenges, including helping to build and grow the team, developing our knowledge base, taking ownership of inherited code and helping it reach the next level, through refactoring, modularization and collaboration with other teams. It was a great experience and helped me grow as a professional.

    Working on backend financial systems for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange that processes massive amounts of trade data, with an emphasis on performance; high throughput and very low latency. In contrast with my previous C++ experience, most of the work is Java based, so it's a great opportunity to hone my Java skills.

    I compose original music for hi-end mobile platforms (so far all of our latest projects have been on the iPhone). That means that instead of MIDI music and sound FX, my entire work now consists of digital audio. Again, work is on a very varied range of musical styles and tight schedules.

    Published titles include:
    * Fly Kiwi, Fly! (iPhone)
    * Fly Kiwi, Fly! - World Tour (iPhone)
