Just wrapped up a thought-provoking week at the i-Rec Conference in Santiago, Chile – an inspiring gathering of scholars reimagining how we think about disasters. A standout moment was our site visit to Viña del Mar, where we witnessed firsthand the devastation caused by the 2024 wildfires – the deadliest in Chile’s history. The scale of loss and ongoing recovery challenges was a powerful reminder of the urgency for more just, inclusive, and sustainable approaches to post-disaster reconstruction. I'm incredibly proud of our research group for their contributions throughout the week – big congratulations to Grace Muir, Annika Burkhardt, Angga Arief Gumilang S, and Arvin Hadlos for their insightful presentations that pushed important conversations forward. Heartfelt thanks to Jorge León, Magdalena Gil, and Magdalena Vicuña for their thoughtful organisation and warm hospitality, and gratitude to CIGIDEN, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Maria for so generously hosting. Grateful for the conversations, collaborations, and shared commitment to advancing more equitable recovery futures. Always good to catch-up with old friends - and make new ones!
