🚍 Meet Ariana Salas Castillo, our second Scholar in Residence of 2025! A postdoctoral researcher at the Columbia Climate School, she is investigating the #politicaleconomy of #urbanmobility in Latin America. Despite Santiago’s world-renowned electric bus fleet and progressive, inclusive policies, changes in ridership, congestion, and car use haven’t been as significant as expected. During her stay, Ariana is interviewing public officials and academics to understand why. Stay tuned for her insights on how transportation can advance climate resilience, public health, and social justice in the Global South. 💬 “I’m grateful to Columbia Global Centers Santiago for ing this project in a city that feels more and more familiar,” she said after arriving. Stay tuned for insights into how public and private transport reforms can truly transform our cities—and our climate—by moving people fairly, sustainably and effectively. 👉🏽 Read more here! https://lnkd.in/eUGanxGK

🇵🇪📚 On #WorldBookDay, we pause to the incredible Mario Vargas Llosa, the Peruvian Nobel Laureate who shaped Latin American literature and who until his death on April 13, remained as the last surviving member of the Latin American literary "Boom" generation. A towering figure in 20th-century Latin American literature, his powerful narratives and sharp political insights, Vargas Llosa’s pen and voice resonated across the globe. Observer, provocateur, relentless questioner, Vargas Llosa was never afraid to challenge norms. His life was marked by controversy and courage, including two outrageous marriages and a legendary punch to his —until then— intimate friend Gabriel García Márquez, after which the two literary giants never spoke again. Through his political views, personal decisions and fearless novels, at once tender and incisive, humorous and tragic, Mario Vargas Llosa left a lasting imprint on Latin American identity and his work will continue to provoke and inspire. Although perhaps unknown, Vargas Llosa’s bond with Columbia University was significant: he was a visiting professor in 1975-1976; during the 1980s he visited for conferences; in 2005 he attended the #WorldLeadersForum and the following year he received the Maria Moors Cabot Prize from the Columbia University - Graduate School of Journalism, recognizing his vital contributions to journalism and inter-American understanding. 💧 How does climate change threaten the future of high-altitude megacities like Santiago? During his recent residency in Chile, Joerg Schaefer—Lamont Research Professor at Columbia Climate School's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory —engaged with academics, students, policymakers, and legal experts to address one of the region’s most pressing challenges: the #watercrisis. As Columbia Global's first Scholar in Residence in Santiago, Schaefer shared insights from decades of glacier research to emphasize the urgency of collective, science-based solutions. His powerful message: if emissions aren't curbed, 80% of glaciers could vanish by 2100. 🌎 On this #EarthDay, we’re reminded that protecting our planet means protecting its water. From the Andes to the Arctic, understanding ice melt is key to #climateresilience. 🔗 Read more about his visit, his research work with Instituto de Geografía UC, and collaborations in Santiago and Patagonia here: https://lnkd.in/eFQWGJy7 Columbia Global Centers #columbiauniversity #columbiaglobalcenters #columbiaglobal #columbiaclimateschool #ClimateCrisis #WaterSecurity #GlacierMelt #earthday2025 #diadelatierra #díadelatierra #ourpowerourplanet

WOMEN'S MONTH | As we keep commemorating #WomensMonth, we celebrate Magda Arce Fernández—a Chilean educator and writer who studied at Columbia in the 1930s and 1940s, specializing in Library Science and Hispanic-American Bibliography at the School of Library Science—the first of its kind in the United States, which operated from 1887 to 1992. 📚 Arce's time at #ColumbiaUniversity extended further when she won a Latin American scholarship, allowing her to study under Spanish Professor Federico de Onís, a renowned scholar and the founder of the Columbia University Department of Latin American and Iberian Cultures, where, she completed an M.A. and a Ph.D in Literature. 🎓🌎 🔍 📜 Her work includes uncovering a priceless archive of Chilean Nobel laureate Gabriela Mistral’s personal documents, an achievement that has enriched Chile’s literary heritage.
